I Can't Believe I'm Showing You.

I've been busy lately Gentle Readers. In an effort to entertain you I'm going to show you my upstairs hall.  I stripped off some nasty paper and painted the walls last fall when the cat was away in the Dominican Republic.  It's still not done up but I want you to look at my old dresser.

I think a lot of girls had a similar one when they were teens or younger.  It's really beat up.  My girls used it lovingly. That wall was once the end of the house and is covered in wide horizontal boards.  I don't think I should paint it, do you?  Remember, this house was built in 1802.

There are all kinds of stains and smudges that just won't come off.  I've seen lots of pictures on the Internets of ones that people have made over.

Or, this one.

Here's the other end of the hall.
Is that hall gorgeous or what!  Don't you love the colour (gag) of the floor? The staircase is just past the pine dresser and you can see a couple of shelves over it.  My paint brush wouldn't reach that far so of course it isn't painted yet.

So dear Readers, I would like some advice on what colour to paint that dresser.  It isn't going downstairs in one piece because we had to take out a wall to get it up there, so I'm stuck with it.  Should I paint it some bright happy colour like red or turquoise?  Maybe a sedate gray or pale aqua. I bought some great drawer pulls majorly on sale some time ago for it. Please help.  Maybe your input will make me gitter done. Or not.

p.s. To cheer me you up here's a photo of my grand baby that daughter #1 just posted on Facebook with her Iphone.  These high tech youngins!

I would go straight to Steve for his impeccable input. He has a lovely arsenic green dresser that might be up your alley. Personally I do lean towards both of your bright colour ideas, depending on which suits your other stuff better. Your wide naked planks are just perfect. They've been watching for a long time so how could you ever paint them over?! I often get the house paint out when I'm stir crazy. Good luck!

PS. He really is a very grand little baby! Isn't it beautiful watching their faces fill out and change in those first months?

That's just what it is Annie! I am stir crazy. Well at least crazy.

Don't paint a thing I say! When I saw the first image, I thought it may have been Pinterest. The timber boards do make me think of a Canadian cottage. They are beautiful. Really beautiful. Hello gorgeous baby.
I see nothing wrong with the floor colour at all. I could spend hours in your hall with a good book.
Hello gorgeous boy!

I'm repeating myself. That baby deserved a double mention though.

Hi Deb!
I can't believe I'm saying this but I vote for a bright color like aqua or a pretty melon/orange. I think it will be so pretty with the colors of all the books and with the warm walls and floors. Go for it!

My cat's away next week...whatever shall I do?! :)

The grandbaby is ADORABLE! I'm not ready but I secretly can't wait.

Definitely don't paint those horizontal boards. They made it over 200 years without being painted so....

I kind of agree with Raine about how beautiful that first photo is. But I'm totally confused about where this dresser is. And that's a hallway? It looks like a room.

In any event, if the floors are dark and the wall is dark, I think the dresser should be light. If not white, maybe a pale gray or pale turquoise (if you want color) because the color of those bottles looks nice. Your house doesn't seem like a bright color house to me.

Grandbaby is cute! He's changed a lot since we last saw him.

Go with what your heart says! Head to the paint store, get the one you love, and go for it. After all, it's only paint, right? I think I'm going turquoise or aqua with my "new" dresser even though red was the overwhelming choice. Think of it as the start of something new - a new palette or a new room. Boy am I full of myself today. But I do sound profound and new age, don't I?

You should know better than to ask a bunch of bloggers.

What do the knobs look like?

Ok, baby is beautiful and definitely trumps dresser, but I think the dresser would look so cute in a happy colour (I spelled that the Canadian way for you). I'm sure you guessed I would pick a happy colour, but...it would cheer things up in the winter. I also really like the natural wood tone wide boards on the wall. I wouldn't paint those. Your subway sign rocks. That hallway is a great space.

I can't wait to see what you do with the dresser!

You know I left a comment before, but it hasn't appeared.

What I said was, that I'd go with Steve's idea for grey. He's the man-in-the-know. I trust no one else in the Northern Hemisphere.

I'd leave those horizontals. They're gorgeous. And as for the floor boards, they're beautiful. Most of the homes in Queensland have wooden floorboards and I think they're great.

As for that baby ... you know my thoughts on his gorgeousness.

That baby is so so cute! look a those lips and that chin...i just want to squeeze him!!!! I am hopeless at colour choices so will just agree with MMMC...she is clever on these things xxxxx Katherine PS I like the look of the rocker on the right...

You should show those floorboards ... I think that's less a 'hallway' more a 'landing'.

I think we all want a room-by-room reveal of your house. It's beautiful!

Definitely no painting of the horizontal wall boards! Lovely warm colour.

My choice for the dresser would be a colour we call 'oyster' but not sure if they call it that in the English-speaking countries! It's a soft greyish hue, but not a 'cold' grey. If you get what I mean.
