International Dateline.

On Saturday, Daughter #2 and I headed for the U.S. border.  We like to shop over there once in a while and it's not too far away from where we live.  Here's the border crossing:

If you believe that I've got some swampland in Florida for you.

It's just a sign.

No, here it is.  The towns on either side of the border are divided by a river.  When we crossed the bridge, #2's cellphone changed it's clock automatically.  Suddenly we were a whole hour younger.  Amazing!  These days you need a passport to enter the U.S.  We handed ours over to the U.S. border guard.  Usually they just ask you where you're going and how long you'll be there.  This time, we got the third degree.  He wanted to know what relation we were to each other, what we did for a living and our astrological birth sign.  Sheesh, we hadn't even bought anything yet, we were on our way over,  Mr. Man.  Then he wants us to pop the trunk for heaven's sake!  What do we look like?  A pregnant lady and a middleaged and still beautiful matronly type.

I guess you just never know.  And I didn't have my press pass either.  That would have showed him.

I think they do that when they're bored or in a bad mood.

When we used to go back and forth a lot, that would happen every now and then. My grandmother would get so flustered, she would start giving the wrong answers. It never really mattered because I don't think they really pay attention. They just do it for fun.

Did you tell him you were going to blog about this?

Man! If you would have had your press pass he would have TOTALLY gone easy on you :). I love the cross over sign. too funny.

What is better about shopping in the US?

I am in love with your cat millie. Oh my goodness! She could not be cuter.

Crossing borders - what a joke. Many years ago we in the UK could go to France with a sort of 'day pass' (though many of us had full passports anyway). But since the EU developed and the UK got shirty about it, everyone now gets the third degree even when coming back home from a family holiday. My Australian family now gets better treatment on arrival than we do just re-entering after a weekend in France which is 22 miles across the channel. Do you think your daughter would make me a Press Pass please?

You have rights, you know! I'd be writing to the Consul of Blogland and making a complaint.

I think it's so fascinating that you can just drive over to another country. Is it that the shopping is better/cheaper? (I won't tell Border Security).

I love going across, too for the cheap fabric.. smile.
The butter costs as much as ours now, though.

Love the press pass! Glad you made it through border patrol. Never know what you might be hiding in your trunk. ;-) Be glad I wasn't in the car with you. I look guilty naturally. They would have strip searched you!

We've never had any problems going or coming, till the last time we went.

It was this tiny little girl, she was 4 foot frig-all, 90 lbs soaking wet!! So I think she had an inferiority complex. Boy did she give us the once over. I mean come on...2 middle aged fabulous people and an (a the time) 8 year old.Geez!! I guess they can't trust anyone nowadays.

But like you where are you going? When are you getting there? Who are you going to visit? What are their names and the address. When are you coming back? etc....etc...

Won't be going back for a while.
Not too friendly.

Those border guards were a tad psycho when I used to live in NB thirty years ago. I can only imagine what they're like now. The Canadian ones were stern enough, but the American ones seemed downright crazy and just hoping to find someone breaking a law.

Steve- I always get flustered.
Wrath- The Canadian ones are uber friendly now.
R&S- The shopping is much cheaper. Our dollar is par right now with theirs so I don't get why our prices are so high. But I don't want to get all political.
MMMC- Thank you as always for the legal advice.

Did someone mention fabric? Did you find any good deals on that? I love your press pass! Very inventive ;-)

It's the same with us Deb. It's all made in China, yet go to Sth Africa, or the U.K. and it's all cheaper. Except by the time you factor in an air fare, it's not really a saving.

You never know when that press pass will come in handy LOL!

I think 'crossing the border' sounds terribly exotic and that you should blog a song about it. Something to immortalise your pregnant daughter and your beautiful self's travelogue. I'm just saying.

Next time, take the press pass. I swear, he'll pose for a picture with you. And then we can all see it.
