Amost Famous...

Gentle Readers,
I'm sure many of you follow some home design blogs.  One day they announce with glee that their home has been featured in a magazine.  We all sigh with envy and wish this would happen to us.  Well, readers, I'm here to tell you that it happened to me.  Yes it did. My five fifteen minutes of fame.  In 1999. In a Canadian magazine.  In a Canadian magazine that is now no more. The magazine ended its reign under the title Canadian Home and Country.

Here's how  we got featured.  My friend and neighbour dropped by one day with camera in hand and asked if she could take some photos of the house so she could write an article and submit it to said magazine.  Of course I said yes, I mean who wouldn't?  So she proceeded to take tons of pictures of every room in the house with me madly clearing away clutter before her.
This was before digital cameras became the norm so she had to develop the film, write the article, send it away, and hope that it would be accepted.  Time passed and I totally forgot about the whole thing.

My husband attended his annual meeting in Halifax.  While there, a colleague mentioned to him that she saw the article on our house in Century Home.  What?  Nobody told us.  I scrambled to buy 100 a few copies of the magazine.  Here's what I found when I tore through the magazine:

Waaay back on page 81.  See the article that says, Boxed In?  Yeah.  That's our staircase after I took down the first lot of ugly wall paper.  It doesn't seem like they had photo shop back in the day either, see the nice air freshener sitting on the floor to the right? Classy.  They didn't use my friend's article at all and used this photo with no credit to her.

So, the moral of this tale is Be Careful What You Wish For.  You just might run a magazine out of business.

If they featured your entire house, I'm sure they would have sold enough magazines to keep them in business! They clearly didn't know a good thing when they saw it. Funny about the air freshener. At least you can see your home made it into the pages of a magazine...too bad your friend didn't get proper credit for her photo.

Happy Monday!

Well isn't that a bizarre outcome for you and your friend. As for the magazine, I guess they've had their just desserts.

I was more than a little ticked when they went under, after I had just renewed by subscription for two years, without even so much as a boo of a goodbye. I wrote to ask for my money back, (or some sort of compensation) you can guess what the reply was....there wasn't one.

It's a shame your friend didn't get credit for her picture. I'm curious about what she thought.

at least they didn't show the litter box that was sitting right accross from the air freshener ;) I can photoshop it in if you like.
